The 13th Chinese Bridge Competition in Latvia

——Adults and College Students Division

With the support of “Chinese Bridge Fund” established by Hanban/Confucius Institute Headquarters, the 13th “Chinese Bridge” Chinese Proficiency Competition in Latvia, sponsored by the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in the Republic of Latvia, organized by Confucius Institute at University of Latvia, co-organized by the Faculty of Humanities at  University of Latvia, Confucius Centre at Stradins University, Riga Technical University, Vidzeme University, Transport and Telecommunication Institute, Daugavpils University and Rezekne Academy of Technologies, will be held on March 11th (Friday), 2016.

1. Purpose

The purpose of holding this competition is to promote Chinese language and culture in Latvia, to provide a platform for Chinese language learners in Latvia, to show their achievements in learning Chinese, to learn from and communicate with each other, to motivate their interest and enthusiasm to learn Chinese and to improve their understanding of Chinese language and culture. In addition, the competition aims at selecting the qualified candidates for the upcoming 15th “Chinese Bridge” Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreign College Students which will be held in China.

3. Eligibility

Latvian adults and college students whose mother tongue is not Chinese

4. Classification of Participants and Requirements for Application

     Adults and college students division will be divided into three levels based on the contestants’ ages and their years of studying Chinese

(1) Primary Level: Undergraduates in enrollment or non-students (with the ages of 18-30) or Adults (without age limit), learning Chinese less than 1 year (including 1 year)

(2) Intermediate Level: Undergraduates in enrollment or non-students (with the ages of 18-30) or Adults (without age limit), learning Chinese 1-3 years (including 3 years)

(3) Advanced Level: Undergraduates in enrollment or non-students (with the ages of 18-30) or Adults (without age limit), learning Chinese more than 3 years

5. Contents of Competition

1. General Requirements

(1) Self-introduction(1-2 minutes):to introduce your basic information and hobbies, etc.

(2) Making a Speech in Chinese (without manuscript, 2-3 minutes): The speech should be referred to the knowledge of Chinese language and China’s culture and situation, etc.

(3) Chinese Talent Show(2-3 minutes): It must be related to one of the following talents — China’s songs, dances, folk arts, musical instruments, calligraphy, painting, paper-cutting and Kong Fu, etc. The contestants also can show their native folk culture making use of one of Chinese Talents)

(4) Answering the Question(s) on the Spot (related to question fixed in advance): To test the contestants’ mastery of Chinese language and Chinese culture and situation

  (1) Primary Level

  (3) Advanced Level

A. Self-introduction (1-2 minutes)

B. Making a Speech in Chinese on a Topic (3 minutes)

C. Chinese Talent Show (2-3 minutes)

D. Answering the Questions on the Spot (related to question fixed in advance; 10 regular short-answer questions for advanced level)

Notes: Relevant references and reviewing materials will be published on the websites of each registry; The content of Chinese Talent Show can be chosen by contestants who can be rewarded with extra scores by the Committee of Judges based on their performances on the spot.

 7. The Preliminary Competition

I. Time: It will be held separately by the organizers of each registry before 27th Feburary

II. Place: It will be decided by the organizers of each registry, but the list of candidates who will participate in the final competition should be sent to Mrs. Laura Kregere, the secretary of the Confucius Institute at University of Latvia, by 1st March.

8. Final Competition

I. Time: At 10:00 a.m. on March 11th (Friday)

II. Place: University of Latvia, Faculty of Humanities

III. Address: 4a Visvalža street , Riga, Latvia

 9. Award

I. The first prize, the second prize and the third prize will be separately granted the Champion, Runner-up and Second Runner-up for each level in final competition (9 in total); the superior prizes will be given to the rest of the participants in the final competition. All the recipients of the prizes will be rewarded with trophies and certificates.

II The Champion of the advanced level in Adults and College Students Division will be qualified to go to China for taking part in the 15th “Chinese Bridge” Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreign College Students as the representative of Latvia. His/Her expenses including international travel, accommodation and travel insurance for competition will be covered by Chinese Government. In addition, he/she can acquire 2016/2017 Confucius Institute Scholarship issued by Chinese government for one semester. However, the person(s) who participated in the similar competition earlier in China won’t be able to attend to the competitions mentioned above as the same identity.

III. The Runner-up of the advanced level in Adults and College Students Division will be qualified to go to China for taking part in the 15th “Chinese Bridge” Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreign College Students as audience of Latvia. His/Her expenses including international travel, accommodation and travel insurance for competition will be covered by Chinese Government. However, the person(s) who participated in the similar competition earlier in China won’t be able to attend to the competitions mentioned above as the same identity.

IV. The Champion of Primary Level and the Champion and Runner-up of the Intermediate and Advanced Levels in Adults and College Students Division will be granted top priorities to be recommended for 2016/2017 Chinese Government Scholarship.
