The 13th Chinese Bridge Competition in Latvia

With the support of “Chinese Bridge Fund” established by Hanban/Confucius Institute Headquarters, the 13th “Chinese Bridge” Chinese Proficiency Competition in Latvia, sponsored by the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in the Republic of Latvia, organized by Confucius Institute at University of Latvia, co-organized by Confucius Centre at Stradins University, Riga Culture Secondary School, Riga No.34 Secondary School and Smiltenes Center Secondary School, will be held on April 8th (Friday), 2016.
I. Purpose
The purpose of holding this competition is to promote Chinese language and culture in Latvia, to provide a platform for Chinese language learners in Latvia, to show their achievements in learning Chinese, to learn from and communicate with each other, to motivate their interest and enthusiasm to learn Chinese and to improve their understanding of Chinese language and culture. In addition, the competition aims at selecting the qualified candidates for the upcoming 9th “Chinese Bridge” Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreign Secondary Students which will be held in China.

Latvian teenagers and children whose mother tongue is not Chinese
IV. Classification of Participants and Requirements for Application
Teenagers and children division will be divided into two divisions or four levels based on the contestants’ ages and their years of studying Chinese
1. Teenagers Group
(1) Primary Level: Students (with the age of 12-18 )
(2) Intermediate Level: Students (with the age of 12-18 )
(3) Advanced Level: Students (with the age of 12-18 )
2. Children Group
Pupils (under the age of 12)
V. Contents of Competition
1. General Requirements
(1) Self-introduction
(2) Making a Speech in Chinese (only for medium and advanced level of teenagers division; without manuscript, 2-3 minutes): It should be referred to the knowledge of Chinese language and China’s culture and situation, etc.
(3) Chinese Talent Show: It might be one of talents showed, which should be referred to China’s songs, dances, folk arts, musical instruments, calligraphy, painting, paper-cutting and Kong Fu, etc. The contestants also can show their native folk culture making use of one of Chinese Talents)
(4) Answering the Question(s) on the Spot (only for advanced level of teenagers division; related to question fixed in advance): To test the contestants’ mastery of Chinese language and Chinese culture and situation
2. Specific Requirements
(1). Teenagers Group
A .Primary Level
a. Self-introducing (1-2 minutes)
b. Singing a Chinese Song or Reciting a Chinese Poem (2 minutes)
B. Intermediate Level
a. Self-introducing (1-2 minutes)
b. Making a Speech on a Topic (1-2 minutes)
c. Chinese Talent Show (1-2 minutes)
C. Advanced Level
a. Self-introducing (1-2 minutes)+ Making a Speech on a Topic(2-3 minutes)
b. Answering Three Questions (related to common knowledge of Chinese
language and China’s culture and situation)
c. Chinese Talent Show (1-2 minutes)
Notes: ① Relevant references and reviewing materials will be published on the websites of each registry; ② The content of Chinese Talent Show can be chosen by contestants who can be rewarded with extra scores by the Committee of Judges based on their performances on the spot.
(2). Children Group
A. Self-introducing (1 minute)
B. Chinese Talent Show (1 minute)
Notes: There is no restriction on content of Chinese Talent Show; the score got can be higher if the content is related to Chinese culture or language.

1. Time: From 25th February to 25th March

VII. The Preliminary Competition
1. Time: It will be held separately by the organizers of each registry before 22nd March
2. Place: It will be decided by the organizers of each registry, but the list of candidates who will participate in the final competition should be sent to Ms. Laura Kregere, the secretary of the Confucius Institute at University of Latvia, by 25th March.
VIII. Final Competition
1. Time: At 10:00 a.m. on April 8th (Friday)
2. Place: At the Auditorium (on the Second Floor) of Riga Technical University.
If the place were changed, a notice should be made later.
3. Address: 1 Kaļķu street , Riga, Latvia
IX. Award
1. The first prize, the second prize and the third prize will be separately granted the Champion, Runner-up and Second Runner-up for each level in final competition (12 in total), the superior prizes will be given to the rest of the participants in the final competition. All the recipients of the prizes will be rewarded with trophies and certificates.
2 The champion and runner-up of the advanced level in Teenagers Division will be qualified to go to China for taking part in the 9th “Chinese Bridge” Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreign Secondary Students as the representatives of Latvia. Their expenses including international travel, accommodation and travel insurance for competition will be undertaken by Chinese Government. In addition, they can acquire 2016/2017 Confucius Institute Scholarship issued by Chinese government for one semester. However, the person(s) who participated in the similar competition earlier in China won’t be able to attend to the competitions mentioned above as the same identity.
3. The champion and runner-up of the Intermediate level in Teenagers Division will be qualified to go to China for taking part in the 9th “Chinese Bridge” Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreign Secondary Students as audiences of Latvia. Their expenses including international travel, accommodation and travel insurance for competition will be undertaken by Chinese Government. However, the person(s) who participated in the similar competition earlier in China won’t be able to attend to the competitions mentioned above as the same identity.
4. The winners (only for High School Graduates) in Teenagers Division will be granted top priorities recommended for 2016/2017 Chinese Government Scholarship.
