“Happy牛Year”——Faculty of Humanities, University of Latvia Welcome the Year of the Ox
February 11th and 12th, 2021, Beijing time, the teachers and students of the Sinology Department of the Faculty of Humanities, University of Latvia ushered in the Year of Ox together in a series of “New Year Limited” activities.
Two weeks before the arrival of the Spring Festival, seven students of the Faculty of Humanities recorded their talent show videos for the first online Spring Festival Gala that the Confucius Institute was preparing. These programs, including Chinese song singing, paper cutting, painting, hand-making, and lion dance performances, showed students’ blessings to the Confucius Institute and their love for Chinese culture.
On New Year’s Eve, Chinese teacher Bai Bingyu and the freshmen and sophomores celebrated the Spring Festival online. Through reading the Spring Festival picture book “Dragons in the City”, watching Spring Festival videos, singing the song “12 Zodiac”, making the Spring Festival couplets and cutting papers for the Year of the Ox, students perceived the customs and connotations of the Chinese New Year.
On New Year’s Day, the Chinese class turned to the students’ kitchen. The juniors and their teacher made dumplings together. While exchanging opinions about the new year culture of China and Latvia, they prepared a special lunch full of Chinese new years’ flavor for themselves and their families.
On the arrival of the Year of Ox (牛niú), I wish all teachers and students of the Confucius Institute at the University of Latvia “Happy牛Year!”
