The Fifth Anniversary of a Series of Activities in Confucius Institute at University of Latvia—Resonance of Di and Sheng Concert
Local time at 6:00pm on February 20th ,2016, Resonance of Di and Sheng Concert by Confucius Institute at Latvia University had been held in University of Latvia successfully. Chinese contemporary young musicians, Hu Yulin and Zheng Yang jointly played bamboo flute Dizi and Sheng ,the Chinese traditional musical instruments.
The Counselor of China to Latvia, Mr. Li Tao, Chinese Consul in Latvia,Mr. Zeng Fuhua, Latvian Director of the Confucius Institute Professor Peteris Pildegovics, Chinese Director of the Confucius Institute Professor Shang Quanyu, Director of Asia Department in humanities faculty, Mr. Leon Taivans, representatives of the Chinese Association, Estonia musician, Latvia musician, reporters from Xinhua News Agency ,Chinese volunteer teachers and students attended this concert.
February 20th is Chinese Lantern Festival eve, and it’s also the beginning of the fifth anniversary of a series of activities in Confucius Institute at University of Latvia, which can be described as double celebration. In order to promote the exchange of culture and art between China and Latvia and make Chinese learners learn more about Chinese culture, we invited Chinese young musicians to bring us a visual feast.
At first, An Ze, the host, introduced two musicians’ educational background and performance career. Although they were very young, they repeatedly won awards in music competitions in China and had a rich performance experience. Hu Yulin, assistant professor in Music School of Capital Normal University, Beijing, had many compositions like “Rain from the Heaven” and “Bamboo Words in Copper Ridge ”. He also created some unique playing methods. Before the concert, Mr.Raho Langsepp, Estonia musician, made a brief speech. As the planner of this concert, he invited the two musicians to play music tour in Latvia and Estonia. He said, bamboo flute Dizi and Sheng , as Chinese traditional musical instruments, can blend with western musical instruments. Many foreign music lovers were familiar with them. In addition, some traditional musical instruments like vertical bamboo flute “xiao” and XUN can be played beautifully. After introduction, the concert began.
The two musicians played many songs in ensemble or solo ways, for example, ”Bamboo rain”, ”Yangguan Sandie”, “Happy Encounter” and so on, which brought the atmosphere to the climax again and again. In addition, they also played some classic pop music. In the ending, they invited Indian musicians to play together. Different culture had a collision in harmony. The whole concert lasted one and half hour in an elegant and warm atmosphere. When the concert were finished, many audience highly praised the concert and some students from Confucius Institute even wanted to try to learn these instruments. They hoped Confucius Institute could provide more opportunities for them to learn Chinese and learn more about rich Chinese culture.
In the end of the concert, Mr. Li Tao, the Counselor of China to Latvia, shared his experience with audience. He thanked for the musicians and expected we could hold more and better cultural activities by “16+1 Cultural Exchange Year”. He also hoped there were more extensive exchanges and cooperation between China and Latvia.
