Chinese Ambassador and Latvian State Secretary Visited LUCI
In the morning of August 17th, Mr. Huang Yong, the Chinese Ambassador to Latvia, and Mr. Andrejs Pidegovics, the State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Latvia were invited by Confucius Institute at the University of Latvia to discuss about the preparation of the Seminar on Sinology and Chinese Teaching in Central and Eastern European Countries. The meeting was held in the Faculty Club at the University of Latvia. Mr. Huang Yong, the Chinese Ambassador to Latvia, Mr. Andrejs Pidegovics, the State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Latvia, Mr. Zhang Fang, Director of the Department of Asian Affairs of MFA, Prof. Peteris Pidegovics, Latvian-side Director of LUCI, Prof. Shang Quanyu, Chinese-side Director of LUCI, and the LUCI secretary and Volunteer Chinese Teachers attended this meeting.
2016 is a very important year in the history of relations between China and Latvia. This year is the 25th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Latvia. In this year, the 5th China – Central and Eastern Europe “16+1” Leaders Summit will be held in Riga, Latvia. Under this background, the Seminar on Sinology and Chinese Teaching in Central and Eastern European Countries is strongly supported by Hanban. During the meeting, Prof. Shang Quanyu firstly introduced the basic situation of the seminar. Mr. Andrejs Pidegovics expressed the government’s stand to support for the event. Then comments and suggestions were put forward on the relevant issues of the seminar, including the specific time, number of the invitees, and the preliminary arrangement for the seminar. At the end, Prof. Peteris Pidegovics summarized and put forward that the seminar should be mainly consisted of three parts: the Sinologists’ results demonstration, Prof. Peteris Pidegovics’s introduction to his dictionary, and the awarding ceremony for people who have made outstanding contributions to the relationship between China and Latvia.
