Confucius Institute at the University of Latvia was founded on November 4th, 2011. It is the only authorized organization of Chinese teaching and Chinese culture research in Latvia. LU Confucius Institute is a non-profit educational organization founded in cooperation between University of Latvia and South China Normal University, and all Chinese language teachers of LU Confucius Institute come from China. Best students of Confucius Institute will be recommended for a one semester or a full academic year scholarship of further language studies in China.
In order to meet the requests of enthusiasts who want to learn Chinese, in the academic year 2013/2014 LU Confucius Institute will provide Chinese courses second time already. Courses will be divided into three levels: the Elementary level, Intermediate level and Advanced level.
Courses Description
Elementary Chinese Courses
Course Name: Elementary Chinese Courses
Course Code: ValoT164
Course Credit: 4
ECTS Credit: 6
The elementary course aims at learning basic Chinese language. During the course, students will learn Pinyin, Greetings, Self-introduction, Animals, Directions, Family, Friends and Work, Hobby, Clothing and Color, Shopping, the Spring Festival, Weather and Season, Sports, Travel, Birthday.
Text books: Learn Chinese With Me, KUAILE HANYU, Chinese Paradise.,etc.
Learning outcomes:
After accomplishing the course, students will be able to: understand and use conversational phrases and sentences. Students will have learned the Chinese pronunciation and will be able to use the Chinese language tones, basic grammar. In the end of the course students will be able to take international Chinese language level test (HSK) levels 1-2.
Requirements for awarding credit points
Tests: 50% – one test in the end of every monthAfter Semesters 1. and 2. – examination 50%, written and oral
Intermediate Chinese Courses
Course Name: Intermediate Chinese Courses

Course Credit: 4
ECTS Credit: 6
The course aims to develop intermediate-level Chinese language listening perception, conversational and reading skills. The topics including: Chinese greeting ways, Time and weather, Having dinner, Shopping, Directions, See a doctor, Rent a house. Traffic, Communication, Learning and Life, Chinese Zodiac, Climate, Chinese Idioms, Hotel, Health and Leisure, Tourism.
Text books: Contemporary Chinese2, Comprehensive Chinese, New Practical Chinese Reader, etc.

Tests: 50% – one test in the end of every monthAfter Semesters 1. and 2. – examination 50%, written and oral
At the end of the course students will be able to hold a conversation on a variety of everyday topics, with deeper knowledge of Chinese language. At the end of the course students should be able to take part in the international Chinese language HSK test at the level 3-4.
Advanced Chinese Courses
Course Name: Advanced Chinese Courses

Course Credit: 4
ECTS Credit: 6
The course aims to develop advanced-level Chinese language reading and writing skills.
During the course, topics are including: Advertising and Posters, Environment protection, Television and Film, Chinese Clothing, Popular Music, News Reading, Prose Appreciation, Cities of China, Culture of traditional Chinese Medicine, Economic Reform of China, Housing Policy of China, Chinese Opera, Rare Animals in China, Chinese Cuisine Culture.
Text books: Developing Chinese, Experiencing Chinese, DAJIA SHUO HANYU,etc.
Learning out comes:
At the end of the course students will be able to read different type articles such as narration, poem, essay, drama and so on, and write advanced Chinese texts on various topics. With deeper knowledge of Chinese language, the students are able to get a better understanding of Chinese culture. At the end of the course students should be able to take part in the international Chinese language HSK test at the level 5-6.

During all the courses, students are introduced Chinese culture and they can participate in different activities organized by Confucius Institute. Such as Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival or Spring Festival, Calligraphy, Chinese songs, Chinese movies, Ping-pong, Tai Chi, Chinese tea Ceremony, Paper cutting, Chinese national instruments.

The Elementary Class: Group A: 18:00- 19:30 on Monday; 18:00- 19:30 ,19:45~20:30 on Wednesday.
Group B: 18:00- 19:30 on Tueday; 18:00- 19:30 ,19:45~20:30 on Thursday. Rupniecibas 10, Room 410
The Intermediate Class: 18:00- 19:30 on Tuesday and Thursday,
18:00- 19:30 on Friday.

The Advanced Class: 18:00- 19:30 on Monday and Wednesday,

Specific time is according to the final announcement.
Registration Time
Please finish the registration procedures from August 19th to September 7th, 2013. Applicants can go through the procedures at the office of Confucius Institute at University of Latvia or submit the necessary materials online.

Tuition
For the students of Latvia University, primary and secondary school students courses are for free. For other students, the tuition is 68.30EUR per month and there are 4 months each semester. Please transfer the fees into the account below:

6.Course Certificate
The students who accomplish the Chinese course in accordance with the regulations will obtain the Course Certificate from Confucius Institute at University of Latvia.
