Chinese brush calligraphy in Tukums
May 24, 2015, 13:00 o’clock, Tukums International Cultural Day was held in Tukuma Ledus Halle conference hall. This event was organized by Pozitiva Doma Brivpratigie and funded by Erasmus program. Chinese teacher of Confucius Institute at the University of Latvia was invited to participate, and preside over one of the activities—Chinese calligraphy experience corner. This is the first Chinese cultural activity in the city, which represents the widening and deepening of promotion of Chinese culture in different cities in Latvia, so that five thousand years of Chinese civilization are known by more and more people in this country. Local media also carried a report on this event.
The Chinese brush calligraphy corner was held by volunteer teachers Zhang Jie. Around 30 local citizens participated in the event. Firstly, Miss Zhang showed some pictures of the outstanding works of calligraphy which helped to lead people into this traditional Chinese art. Then she explained the structures and ways to create characters. In order to deepen people’s understanding of Chinese calligraphy, Miss Zhang also made an interactive link. After giving a brief introduction to the “four treasures”, the audiences had a chance to experience calligraphy one by one. With Zhang’s guidance, audiences bunked paper, dipped ink and licked pen. In order to increase the interest of the audience, Zhang also selected Chinese name for each audience. At Zhang’s leadership, each audience copied his own name with a brush stroke by stroke. When it should be time to the end, fascinating people was still gathering around the calligraphy corner. The activities had to be extended.
Elena is from Tukums youth center. She said she had never thought her name could be so beautiful, so interesting! She picked up the brush in her hand, as if waving a magic wand in the hand of Harry Potter, wonderfully writing the picturesque and interesting Chinese characters. She loves Chinese calligraphy, she will try to find out more about calligraphy and continue learning.
The activity not only introduces the characters to the audiences, but also stimulates their interest in traditional Chinese calligraphy. The event ended in a warm and harmonious calligraphy experience.
