Admissions Guide for 2015/2016 Chinese Courses of Confucius Institute at University of Latvia

Confucius Institute at the University of Latvia was founded on November 4th, 2011. It is the only authorized organization of Chinese teaching and Chinese culture research in Latvia. LU Confucius Institute is a non-profit educational organization founded in cooperation between University of Latvia and South China Normal University, and all Chinese language teachers of LU Confucius Institute come from China. Best students of Confucius Institute will be recommended for a one semester or a full academic year scholarship of further language studies in China.
In order to meet the requests of enthusiasts who want to learn Chinese, in the academic year 2015/2016 LU Confucius Institute provides Chinese courses at four levels: Children’s level, Elementary level, Intermediate level and Advanced level.
1. Courses Description
(1)Children’s Chinese Courses
Course Name:Children’s Chinese Courses

The children’s course aims at learning basic Chinese language which is related to children’s life. During the course, students will learn Pinyin, Greetings, Self-introduction, Animals, Directions, Family, Friends and Work, Hobby, Clothing and Color, Shopping, the Spring Festival, Weather and Season, Sports, Birthday.
Text books: KUAILE HANYU, TIYAN HANYU, Learn Chinese With Me, etc.
Learning outcomes:
After accomplishing the course, students will be able to: understand and use conversational phrases and sentences. Students will have learned the Chinese pronunciation and will be able to use the Chinese language tones, basic grammar.
(2) Elementary Chinese Courses

The elementary course aims at learning basic Chinese language. During the course, students will learn Pinyin, Greetings, Self-introduction, Animals, Directions, Family, Friends and Work, Hobby, Clothing and Color, Shopping, the Spring Festival, Weather and Season, Sports, Travel, Birthday.
Text books: TIYAN HANYU, Learn Chinese With Me, KUAILE HANYU, etc.
Learning outcomes:
After accomplishing the course, students will be able to: understand and use conversational phrases and sentences. Students will have learned the Chinese pronunciation and will be able to use the Chinese language tones, basic grammar. In the end of the course students will be able to take international Chinese language level test (HSK) levels 1-2.
Requirements for awarding credit points:
Tests: 50% – one test in the end of every month
After Semesters 1. and 2. – examination 50%, written and oral
(3) Intermediate Chinese Courses

The course aims to develop intermediate-level Chinese language listening perception, conversational and reading skills. The topics including: Chinese greeting ways, Time and weather, Having dinner, Shopping, Directions, See a doctor, Rent a house. Traffic, Communication, Learning and Life, Chinese Zodiac, Climate, Chinese Idioms, Hotel, Health and Leisure, Tourism.
Text books: Contemporary Chinese2, Comprehensive Chinese, New Practical Chinese Reader, etc.
Learning out comes:
At the end of the course students will be able to hold a conversation on a variety of everyday topics, with deeper knowledge of Chinese language. At the end of the course students should be able to take part in the international Chinese language HSK test at the level 3-4.
Requirements for awarding credit points:
Tests: 50% – one test in the end of every month
After Semesters 1. and 2. – examination 50%, written and oral
(4) Advanced Chinese Courses
Course Name:Advanced Chinese Courses

The course aims to develop advanced-level Chinese language reading and writing skills.
During the course, topics are including: Advertising and Posters, Environment protection, Television and Film, Chinese Clothing, Popular Music, News Reading, Prose Appreciation, Cities of China, Culture of traditional Chinese Medicine, Economic Reform of China, Housing Policy of China, Chinese Opera, Rare Animals in China, Chinese Cuisine Culture.
Text books: Developing Chinese, Experiencing Chinese, DAJIA SHUO HANYU,etc.
Learning out comes:
At the end of the course students will be able to read different type articles such as narration, poem, essay, drama and so on, and write advanced Chinese texts on various topics. With deeper knowledge of Chinese language, the students are able to get a better understanding of Chinese culture. At the end of the course students should be able to take part in the international Chinese language HSK test at the level 5-6.
Requirements for awarding credit points:
Tests: 50% – one test in the end of every month
After Semesters 1. and 2. – examination 50%, written and oral
During all the courses, students are introduced Chinese culture and they can participate in different activities organized by Confucius Institute, such as Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival, Spring Festival, Calligraphy, Chinese songs, Chinese movies, Ping-pong, Tai Chi, Chinese tea Ceremony, Paper cutting.

(3) Intermediate Chinese Courses
18:00- 20:30 on Tuesday and Thursday, Rupniecibas 10, Floor 4, room 415
(4) Advanced Chinese Courses
18:00- 20:30 on Monday and Wednesday, Rupniecibas 10, Floor 4, room 410
More Advanced Chinese Courses

Specific time is according to the final announcement, it can be changed.
3. Registration Time
Please finish the registration procedures from July 13th to September 4th, 2015. Applicants can go through the procedures at the office of Confucius Institute at University of Latvia (Riga, Raina blvd. 19, room 208).
4. Tuition
For the students of Latvia University, Riga Culture Secondary School and Riga secondary school No. 68 courses are for free. But if only is declared a reference letter from school as prove that students is studying in that educational institution
For the students of other universities and schools, 30.25 Euros is charged per month.
For adults who have finished their schooling, 67.76 Euros is charged per month.
50% discount is for 1. group invalids and for 2 and more children from one family who are learning in Confucius Institute of Latvia University.

5.Course Certificate
The students who accomplish the Chinese course in accordance with the regulations will obtain the Course Certificate from Confucius Institute at University of Latvia.
