Pēteris Pildegovičs, Director of Confucius Institute at University of Latvia from Latvian side, Donates Books to the Riga Central Library and Shares His Chinese Experience
Latvian time June 8 14:00, Pēteris Pildegovičs, director of Confucius Institute at University of Latvia from Latvian side, personally donated his authored works to the Riga Central Library. He also gave an in-depth and insightful lecture on the Chinese stories contained within these books for the attendees. The books donated by Pēteris Pildegovičs to the library included English, Latvian, and Russian versions of “My Chinese Story”, as well as his works “Selected Translations of Tang Poetry” and “Chinese-Latvian Big Dictionary”. Participants in this event included Professor Shang Quanyu, director of Confucius Institute at University of Latvia from Chinese side, and his wife Zhang Guiying, martial arts volunteer teacher Zhong Mengting, staff from the Riga Central Library, and local readers, all of whom expressed great enthusiasm for this colorful event.
This lecture was held at a branch of the Riga Central Library, which happened to be the Riga Ninth Library, where Pēteris Pildegovičs frequented during his primary school years and where he started learning Chinese. In his speech, Pēteris Pildegovičs recalled how he stumbled upon a Russian magazine titled “China”, which narrated stories about Chinese leaders Mao Zedong and Liu Shaoqi. These inspiring stories aroused his strong interest in China and sparked his intense desire to learn Chinese. This seed finally took root in his heart, and now it has borne fruitful results.
Pēteris Pildegovičs’s profound affection and admiration for China sparked great interest among the audience. They actively asked various questions to Pēteris Pildegovičs during and after the lecture, showing a strong curiosity about Chinese culture and Pēteris Pildegovičs’s personal experiences. This event not only promoted the spread of Chinese culture in Latvia, but also strengthened cultural exchanges between the two countries by deepening the Latvian public’s understanding of China.
